Made up a lovely tricky piece of javascript
For work, but very rewarding nevertheless, and in spite of a ten-hour workday on a Sunday, it was pretty good fun. I was using mootools javascript framework, which certainly made the task easier, with a bunch of built-in functions it would have taken me days to fathom otherwise, most likely.

Made progress on laying out the two-part inventions
Checked over the second and third inventions for dynamics and slurs and marked up the fourth one with the same at lunchtime. This evening I dropped the marking into Finale for the fourth invention. Planning on getting the markup from the other day into Finale tomorrow…

Sent out a score
… to a pianist friend of mine who ages ago offered to record some of my piano music for me, but perfectionist procrastinator me kept on delaying sending him the scores because they weren’t all perfectly laid out. It’s true that some of them have some problems to be sorted, but there’s no reason not to send off the ones (well, one) that is publicly presentable. So I have sent him Pieces of Eight. We shall see what he makes of its oddities…

Read about Steve Reich’s piece Drumming
Interesting to read about how his studies in Africa confirmed the direction in which he was heading, and to read his descriptions of how and why he uses the various instruments and voices and phasing patterns in Drumming.

Had an idea about free vs charging for scores
I think I may have worked out a way to balance selling scores with getting as many performances as possible. Needs some refining, but it’s a good start, I think. No, I’m not revealing it here

Finally emailed back a performer
who may be interested in performing one of my pieces someday. And he’s a nice guy anyway, and it never hurts to encourage communication with friendly creative types. I’ve been meaning to write this email for about two months now, so it’s good to have it done.

Bought CDs…
Yes, I succumbed to the HMV sale, but in a good way! Mitsuko Uchida playing the complete piano sonatas of Mozart, which is lovely and was half price, Ton Koopman playing Bach organ music (after reading this blog post) and chamber music by Herbert Howells (after reading this other blog post).

Online composition workshop
This evening I attended the end part (got myself in a muddle in the early part of the evening) of the spnm’s online composition workshop with composer Joe Cutler. Unfortunately, my submitted piece arrived too late to be one of the pieces under discussion, but it was interesting reading the comments posted along the way, and I managed to drop a question in there too.

More work on Psalm 47
The troublesome little beastie it is. This morning I pulled the work I did in my manuscript book at work last week into Finale. It’s OK, I think – or at any rate, it sounds nice, but I’m just not sure if it’s right for this piece. Oh well. Time and more work will tell.
