Resuscitated some of my music copying knowledge

Today I took Gardner Read’s book on music notation in to work with me and read some on the train. I picked up a few things about music copying that I’d forgotten, found out a couple more I hadn’t known and had a good laugh at the more dated sections of the book, being the complete lack of reference to computer typesetting and emphasis on the importance of things such as onion skin manuscript. Sure onion skin still has it’s place, and I’d love to be a fine hand-copyist, but it’s just not practical any more for a busy composer who does everything else on computer anyway.

Not sure what I’ll get done tomorrow – tube strike till Friday, so I may be stuck impersonating a sardine on the Piccadilly Line without room enough to read or do anything. Anyway, I’ll see what I can achieve…
