Bought an iPod Touch!

I’ve been wanting one for ages and now that I’ve got a job I’ve got an excuse – got to have something to keep me going through that 3-hour round trip commute!

Saw the Corot to Monet exhibition

At the National Gallery with some friends. Some interesting work but overall not as exciting as other exhibitions I’ve seen there. Certainly nice to see friends though!

Forms, forms, forms

Made a hefty start on the first forms for the super-secret web project djeli and I are working on. Once the form was done, I pulled out my jQuery reference and tinkered until I had a field that auto-filled in as you fill in another field and which cuts off the auto-fill once you edit it so it doesn’t match any more. A little complicated to explain, but huge fun to get working, and will be useful, I think.

Looks like I might have a job

Pros and cons, of course.

Pros: Lovely people, interesting work, free breakfast bagels on a Friday, good pay, interesting environment for lunchtime shenanigans.

Cons: 3-hour round-trip commute. Have to get up at stupid o’clock to get there on time.

All in all the pros have it though and the “good pay” bit of course means that the iPod Touch I’ve been drooling over will become a reality very soon which will ease the commuting pain.

Watched a video about designing a website

on CSS-Tricks, which now has me all fired up to get back to designing both raspberryblue.com and my new personal site. It’s not much of an achievement, I know, but I’m poorly today and this is about all I’ve been capable of in between naps. iPod cosy is about 2/3 done now.

Started knitting an iPod cosy

This is a bit like baby-clothes-knitting in preparation for the baby’s arrival. I don’t have the iPod Touch yet, but I want its cosy to be ready for when I’m told I’ve got a job and rush out and buy it. I’m making the pattern up as I go along and so far it’s coming along nicely. Red with a purple/blue stripe. I think it’s going to work well.

Got a job interview

The client has very kindly put off the interview till Friday because of my being poorly, which fortunately gives me two days to study for the technical test and try to remember everything I ever knew. Would like this job. It’s with a firm I’ve worked for before – lovely people, interesting work, good pay (we’ll say nothing of the 3-hour-round-trip commute or the insane overtime) – and it would be brilliant to work for them again. Crossing fingers…

Heigh ho

More financial stuff. I’m sure you don’t want to hear the details, but I’m basically done with it now, bar a couple of checks, so yay.

Set up my finances!

Today I finished putting in all the transactions that couldn’t be downloaded from my assorted banks, and it’s so very lovely to see all my balances laid out so clearly and to know exactly where I stand. I also discovered a discrepancy of £200.17 (in my favour) which seems to have gone missing between the first and second statements for my UK working account, so I have put things in motion to get that fixed – got to call them back tomorrow. I even reconciled both my Australian working account and Visa account, and it was all so simple! I know this sounds like excess rapture, but if you’d seen the struggles I’ve been through over the past ten years with MYOB, then you’d understand – this feels like a HUGE leap forward. I now need to reconcile the remaining accounts and then look at setting up a first-draft budget. Time for that tomorrow :-)

Accounting satisfaction

Bought and started setting up my new accounting package today – after much soul-searching and accountant-harrassing I finally settled on iBank. I think it’ll do the job admirably, and if it doesn’t they have a 30-day money-back guarantee when it’s bought from their website. So now I’ve started importing transactions. Just going back to July 2008 for the Australian accounts (start of FY2009) and April 2008 for the UK accounts (ditto). The import’s been really quite easy – nice and streamlined, although I do need to go over transactions and search out those that needed split categories as the splits can’t be notated during import. But so far, so funky. And now it’s nearly 3am so definitely time to call it a day.
