Played around with GrooveMaker

On the iPod Touch. What a cool little programme – loads of fun. Would be even funner if one could load up one’s own loops, but maybe that will come in a later version. At any rate, it made the train trip home fly by.

Started work on an orchestral piece

I’m challenging myself to write an orchestral piece before Christmas so I can apply for the London Contemporary Chamber Orchestra’s workshops next year. They specify a duration of 5 minutes or less, with no minimum duration, so it should certainly be possible. So I sat down at the piano, and then at Finale and started work on an idea… and worked at it solidly for an hour, resulting in 1 minute and 12 seconds of music!!! I’m pretty pleased with it, but I suspect it may not be the right idea for the situation, so I’m going to keep working on idea generation for the next few days and see what happens, then pick the one I think is best to carry on with.

Made my own mixed spice

and then used it in a batch of Nigella Lawson’s ‘Christmas Decorations’ biscuits – rather nice! I thought I should get a bit of a headstart on working out what to bake this Christmas, and it fitted with the messed-up nature of the day. I was going to take them into work, but I don’t think there are really enough left now…

Oh, and having made my own mixed spice (grinding the cloves, even), once everything was baked I looked up and spotted a jar of the stuff sitting way, way up in the top cupboards! Heigh ho.

Guy Fawkes

Pulled myself together and took myself off to the Guy Fawkes fireworks with djelibeybi. We had mulled wine and a good chat while we waited, and of course the display was great, as it always was – and *sounded* particularly good too this year.

Second London performance for Pieces of Eight

This one even better than the first, and a great evening of music before it. The panel session on ‘Getting your music heard’ was great too! I particularly liked the pieces by Julia Usher, Effy Efthmiou, Rebecca Oswald, and Jane Serter. Go look them up!

Made my first bookmarklet

It was driving me mad, constantly typing in new bits of text to convert one site’s URL into another’s – so I wrote a bit of code to do it for me!

Found an undocumented IE8 bug

Undocumented as in nowhere on the Internet. At all. Going to rectify this when I get half a minute :-)

First steps towards producing a CD

Emailed a pianist friend to see if he’s interested in helping me create a CD of my piano music. Exciting!

Mmm telly night

Having spent all day battling sleep, updating emails and killing off some more of my read/review list in the gaps, not to mention having gone from being boiled alive when I got into the office (our heating is a little erratic) to being chilled to the bone by the time I got home, I was just ready for Monday’s night of TV: The Gadget Show, followed by Joss Whedon’s new offering, Dollhouse – first rate relaxation.
