Made progress on laying out the two-part inventions

Checked over the second and third inventions for dynamics and slurs and marked up the fourth one with the same at lunchtime. This evening I dropped the marking into Finale for the fourth invention. Planning on getting the markup from the other day into Finale tomorrow…

Finished first draft psalm layout

Actually I’m a bit miffed at myself because I discovered on the way home that I should have sent off my score to the Temple Music Composition Competition by 1 September when I thought it was 30 September. Really very miffing, actually, because the music was all written, I’d just not been pressuring myself with the laying out because I thought I still had a couple of weeks. Grrr. Anyway, the first draft’s done now – needs to be proofread still and then I need to decide what to do with it.

More layout

Finished off moving the dynamics, hairpins, spread out the staves and added in staff separators for my psalm. Nearly there! Got something strange happening with music spacing – the only one that seems to work properly is Note Spacing, which looks fine for the notes but I’m getting some of the words running together, which Must Not Be. Going to have to tackle the forums for this one, I suspect. Wondering if this is one of the bugs they warned me about in Fin2006… maybe I should have taken their advice and ugraded…

Started laying out the psalm

Took my laptop into work today and have been sitting in the garden at lunchtime moving dynamics and crescendos about and adjusting the space between staves. Discovered that Finale has a guides option! Very helpful!

Resuscitated some of my music copying knowledge

Today I took Gardner Read’s book on music notation in to work with me and read some on the train. I picked up a few things about music copying that I’d forgotten, found out a couple more I hadn’t known and had a good laugh at the more dated sections of the book, being the complete lack of reference to computer typesetting and emphasis on the importance of things such as onion skin manuscript. Sure onion skin still has it’s place, and I’d love to be a fine hand-copyist, but it’s just not practical any more for a busy composer who does everything else on computer anyway.

Not sure what I’ll get done tomorrow – tube strike till Friday, so I may be stuck impersonating a sardine on the Piccadilly Line without room enough to read or do anything. Anyway, I’ll see what I can achieve…
