Wrote a list of everything I’m trying to do

It filled a whole A4 page. Without really trying. Which is rather scary, I think. Conclusion: I’m expecting too much of myself, and because I’m too tired to be rational, I’m blaming others for not apparently putting in as much effort as I’d like them too (even though they have their own stuff going on). I think this has been useful. Unfortunately there’s very little I can ditch off the list right now, but at least now I have a better handle on why I’m falling apart so I can hopefully be a bit kinder to myself and a bit more forgiving of others. Or at least that’s the plan. Oh look – a plan. That’s another thing for the list. *sigh*

Played my flute for a little…

and thought about my sheet-music shopping list: thinking Telemann solo Fantasias, Poulenc Sonata, Chaminade Concertino, the Roussel Jouers de flute – and maybe a little Bach? That ought to keep me occupied for a while :-)

Oh and I cleared a hole in my to-do list too – no more overdues!!

Started hunting for a song text

for the choral piece that’s to be my project to begin this weekend. I’m thinking a psalm, but using both Latin and English versions, mixed up together.

Tested out a new productivity technique

I’ve read a lot lately about a productivity technique called the pomodoro technique which I’ve been thinking could be useful as a way of organising myself into some more regular composition. So I gave it a go today while working from home and I have to say first impressions are quite positive. I’m definitely going to continue the experiment.

Made chocolate chip & cranberry biscuits

and did a lot of preparation for Saturday night’s Christmas feast – we put the turkey in its brine, peeled and cut up the potatoes, made the rice pudding base for the ris a l’amande and wrote up a big minute-by-minute plan for getting everything to the table on time

Instigated a new system

I’ve decided to dedicate 1 hour per week night to getting things done, with one night a week being devoted exclusively to music stuff. Tonight was the first night. Tomorrow I think will be the music night.

Thoughts on a website

Began to pull together some ideas (again) about how I want to tackle my new website. I’ve started this a couple of times but this feels meatier and more like it has a chance of making it to the coding phase.

Heigh ho

More financial stuff. I’m sure you don’t want to hear the details, but I’m basically done with it now, bar a couple of checks, so yay.

Set up my finances!

Today I finished putting in all the transactions that couldn’t be downloaded from my assorted banks, and it’s so very lovely to see all my balances laid out so clearly and to know exactly where I stand. I also discovered a discrepancy of £200.17 (in my favour) which seems to have gone missing between the first and second statements for my UK working account, so I have put things in motion to get that fixed – got to call them back tomorrow. I even reconciled both my Australian working account and Visa account, and it was all so simple! I know this sounds like excess rapture, but if you’d seen the struggles I’ve been through over the past ten years with MYOB, then you’d understand – this feels like a HUGE leap forward. I now need to reconcile the remaining accounts and then look at setting up a first-draft budget. Time for that tomorrow :-)
